What is Hypnosis

Understanding Hypnosis

Few subjects have been more clouded in myth, mystery, and misunderstanding than hypnosis. Since in essence hypnosis is the science of suggestibility, which is created by engaging the imagination, hypnotists themselves have perpetuated many of the myths. This is done to appeal to our magical thinking. That being said, hypnosis can be understood in a rational and scientific way. There are 4 areas of the brain: (1) The Conscious mind, (2) The Critical Area of the mind, (3) Modern Memory of the mind and (4) The Primitive area of the mind

The Conscious Mind

The input one receives through our senses first enters the conscious mind. Here the information is deciphered, analyzed and interpreted. It is this portion of the brain you are using as you read these words. This environmental input is passed to the Critical portion of the brain.

The Critical Area of the Mind

This is the area of the brain in which thoughts are stored. It is partly subconscious and partly analytical because it has been taught by life’s experience to avoid anything that brings danger. This it does automatically. Thus, you avoid touching fire without conscious thought. This area of the brain merely holds thought until sleep occurs or the conscious mind is suspended as during a hypnotic induction. Once this takes place, the message units are either discarded or let go into the Modern Memory area of the mind.

The Modern Memory Area of the Mind

In this area, some thoughts are analyzed, and they pass into the modern memory, others are vented or discarded through dreams. Those thoughts which flow into the modern memory will, in time, settle into different areas of the Primitive mind.

Primitive Area of the Mind

If too many message units to deal with are received, anxiety will occur and it will be impossible to sleep or escape hyper-suggestibility. The result is the critical area becomes less critical and bad habits may be formed because they are dropped directly into this area without being analyzed. The longer a suggestion resides in the modern memory, the weaker and more distorted it will become.

The more quickly an idea flows through these stages of the mind, the stronger and less distorted it will become. At Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast this process will occur with targeted suggestions in minutes, not hours. For this reason, you will swiftly and easily change your bad habits into good ones. Whether your goal is weight loss, anxiety or depression relief, smoking cessation, etc. new habits that empower you may be formed in a speedy, safe and pleasant way. Although the results seem magical, it is achieved through the application of scientific principles of hypnosis.

The World Wants You Fat

Defend Yourself With Hypnosis

There is a war raging to make you fat, keep you that way. Billions of dollars are spent each year on developing cheaply made foods which are unhealthy, fattening and addictive. Special food additives have been introduced to fast food chain menu items. Advertisers spend hundreds of billions of dollars to create within your subconscious a compulsion to consume their products. They use the science of suggestibility to target your unconscious mind. Their crafted words are compellingly clever, the jingles and slogans are memorable and paired with pleasant music and imagery. Their goal is to implant compulsive thoughts deep in the recesses of your unconscious mind. Everyone knows that “Coke is the Real Thing”, and if you are “loving it”, you must be in Mc Donald’s. Want to “taste the rainbow?” Just grab a bag of Skittles. I might sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it is a real battle that is being waged. If you lose, your health, your energy and the quality of your life will be greatly diminished. The good news is: Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast can prepare you to win this battle.

Many, if not most people, are unaware that their unconscious minds are being targeted and conditioned to eat unwholesome, high-calorie addictive foods. The first step in defending yourself from these attacks is awareness of their intent and methods. During a hypnosis session, your unconscious mind can be programmed with a suggestion such as this, I know which healthy foods will support my weight loss, health and energy levels. Whenever I watch an advertisement that tries to convince me to eat foods that are wrong for me, I will smile. With a sense of amusement, I will say silently to myself, “Nice try, but I have no desire to eat unhealthy foods.” Then you will realise with a feeling of pride that you are winning, one skirmish at a time. You may find it amusing to identify to yourself and other people each and every time that you are aware of the fact that a company is trying to control your sub-conscious mind.

Controlling Our Own Thoughts

In the words of William Ernest Henley:

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

You can increase your awareness that you control your own intellect. You are always at liberty to accept or reject any thought that might be presented to you. You may practice affirmations like this to thicken your critical filter to the point that any negative suggestions to your unconscious mind will be immediately and automatically rejected.

Yes, there is a war raging for your money, health, and well-being. True your enemies are numerous, intelligent, educated and well financed. However, the fact remains that ultimately you have the power to decide to accept or reject their incessant targeted attacks. You can’t consciously defeat them, but through the use of hypnosis, you can create for yourself an unassailable defense.

Overcome Fear With Hypnosis

How to Overcome a Fear Using Hypnosis

Nelson Mandela said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” This article is about conquering fear by utilising the scientific principles of hypnosis. Fear is one of mankind’s most basic survival strategies. Our hunter-gatherer forefathers learned that there were many events that could create pain, suffering or even death. Often a quick response to a given stimulus was the difference between life and death. There needed to be an automatic and instantaneous reaction to threatening situations. Those people that learned to fear certain things or events lived long enough to pass their genes on to us. Overcoming fear requires us to determine if it is useful or irrational. It is also beneficial to understand the nature of fear.

Emotional vs. Physical Fear

Fear is felt at the emotional level. Feelings of worry, anxiety, panic, and depression are emotional responses. Your physiology responds as well. Physical changes occur as our bodies prepare us to run, fight or play dead. Breathing may become short in order to pump oxygen to the muscles, the blood may rush from your face so if you are cut, you will not bleed. Adrenalin will quickly flow to your muscles supercharging them with energy and vigor. These responses are mutually reinforcing. The stronger the emotional response, the more powerful the physiological one. The greater the physiological reaction, the more severe the emotional one. These responses are forcefully implanted into your primitive or subconscious mind.

Fear and the Law of Association

If as a child you were bitten by a dog, you may understandably be frightened by dogs, the growl, bark or even the fur of the creature. Perhaps shortly after this event, you visited a zoo at which time, a lion growled at you. You may develop a fear of any animal with fur, in fact, you could become afraid of fur itself or even fur like synthetic fabrics. Obviously, fearing a lion or a growling dog are rational fears. However, a synthetic rug is not. You probably understand this on an intellectual level, but that fear has been driven deeply and powerfully into your unconscious mind.

At Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast, I will guide you through a relaxing induction which will enable you to get in touch with your unconscious mind. He can help you create pleasant imagery, such as you playing with loving and gentle puppies. Gradually the puppy can grow in your mind’s eye until it is a full grown, sweet and affectionate animal. Later you can follow those images by actually petting a kind dog. Furry animals no longer create emotional distress. You will have triumphed over your fear through the use of hypnosis.

Everyone Is Suggestible

Understanding Suggestibility

Albert Einstein famously said, “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” It could be said that understanding the way that we alter our thinking is the only way for humans to create a new and better world. Any type of change occurs because humans are suggestible creatures. Hypnosis is the science of suggestibility. The better one understands this science, the more readily he or she will have the power to create positive behavioral change. Suggestions may be received in a great variety of ways and in overlapping combinations.

Verbal and Non-Verbal Suggestions

Suggestions may come to us in the form of the spoken word, and that message may be delivered either directly as in “Your eyes will close”, or indirectly as when we say, “In a moment you may begin to feel your eyes closing, as your eyelids become heavier and heavier”. Suggestions may also be sent through non-verbal means such as yawning, rolling your eyes, smiling, etc.

Inferred Suggestions

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you”, is an inferred verbal suggestion, while rising quickly and clenching your fist is an inferred non-verbal suggestion. These spoken and non-spoken promptings may be used together to provide clarity and to strengthen the inferred suggestion.

Prestige Suggestion

An example of a verbal prestige suggestion is when a doctor says, “Take two of these a day, get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids”. It is a direct, verbal, prestige suggestion. It means more because it comes from a doctor. The flashing lights of a police car are a non-verbal, inferred, prestige suggestion.

Emotional Appeals

“I love you”, is a direct, verbal, emotional response. Crying is a non-verbal, inferred, emotional suggestion. If you combine these two suggestions, you will have used 6 different types of suggestions.

Social Dictates

Wearing a jacket and a tie in certain restaurants is a social dictate. It doesn’t have to be stated, shown, spoken directly, inferred, emotional or coming from a person of prestige to be clearly received, and yet each if not all of these types of suggestions can be used in combination with social dictates.

As you can see, there are an infinite variety of ways for a person to receive suggestions. Suggestions can be relaxing or produce anxiety, some are very powerful while others lack the ability to alter one’s behaviour. Greg Thompson at Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast has been trained to know when and how to send suggestions in the right combinations to fit the client in his or her current situation to better support their behavioural change goals.

Weight Loss: You’ve Forgotten How

The Forgotten Weight Loss Solution

The debate rages on: Keto diet vs low-fat diet, high fiber diet, diet supplements, cardio exercise vs weight training. There exists a dizzying array of theories about the quickest and best ways to lose weight. Some of these ideas have become quite controversial with proponents exposing their particular belief and denouncing other theories with an almost religious exuberance. It seems as each plan comes with special warnings about its dangers.

Analyzing these weight loss schemes can become mind-numbing.

If only there was a proven plan for weight loss that was not controversial, safe and inexpensive. The good news is there is! A strategy so simple and effective you will wonder why it is talked about so little. The truth is you can lose more weight simply by eating slower.

We have inherited from our hunter/gatherer ancestors a trait which no longer serves us well.

Early man learned to eat as much food as quickly as possible whenever the opportunity presented itself. After all, someone or something could take your food from you, and you never knew when the opportunity to eat again might present itself. Unfortunately, this behaviour doesn’t give our unconscious mind enough time to realise sufficient food has been consumed. Continued eating will only lead to stomach pain, bloating and lethargy. Imagine if you were to consume 300 ml of alcohol as quickly as possible. It could be done in less than a minute, but the consequence would be harmful and potentially lethal. However, if you consumed the same amount of alcohol over the next five hours while chatting pleasantly with friends, you would most likely have a more enjoyable experience. Given enough time to process the fact that you have had too much to drink, your unconscious mind can protect you by impairing your coordination and inhibitions. Thereby, sending cues to friends allows them to give sound advice with regard to your drinking. As a last resort, you might pass out, thereby preventing further self-abuse.

The Simple Solution

Merely by eating more slowly, you will control the amount of food you eat in a natural and healthy way. In addition, you will find that although you eat less, your enjoyment increases. You can consciously bring your attention to the texture, the aroma and the flavor of the food. You can enjoy your companions, the conversation, the ambiance and the feeling of being in control of your eating.

As a general rule of thumb, taking twice as long to eat your food will result in eating 40 percent less.

At Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast, you will be given suggestions that allow you to make this positive and natural behavioral change in a very satisfying and empowering way. You will discover that by simply slowing the rate at which you eat, your portions will decrease while your gratification increases.

You Are Already Hypnotized

Change Your Hypnotist

The question often arises: can I be hypnotized? The short answer is yes, and you already have been. Life is hypnotizing. All of us have been in a state of hyper-suggestibility on a daily basis. Our environment, past experiences, friends, family, television, music, etc. all have the ability to invoke changes in our behaviour at deep subconscious levels. The very fact that we are capable of change is a testimonial to our hypnotic nature. The more appropriate question is: How can I change my hypnotist from a negative to a positive one?

The Bad Hypnotist

Life is made up of external input and the way that we choose to react to that feedback. Our ability to control what happens to us is limited, but our ability to choose to respond to it is absolutely under our power. Frequently, we make predictions based on our worst experiences. These become self-fulfilling prognostications that we will suffer a bad consequence. We, in fact, unintentionally become our own bad hypnotist, feeding undesirable suggestions into our subconscious mind. This is understandable due to our natural inclination to remember negative experiences more strongly than positive ones. In simple terms of survival, it is far better to avoid repeating negative experiences than it is to replicate enjoyable ones. Each time we respond to an outside stimulus, a footprint is left. Much like a game trail, we have a tendency to follow these known paths, making the way clearer and easier to walk even if it means going the wrong direction.

In order to achieve a more desirable result in your life, the first thing you should do is to be consciously aware of your behaviour patterns. For example, perhaps every day when you arrive home from work, your husband asks how your day went. This question may trigger to mind the worst experience of the workday. You may relive that moment through the retelling. The end result is that you once again reinforce how much you hate your job, which in turn produces feelings of anger, frustration or hopelessness. Whenever you experience any negative emotion, this is a cue for you to analyse what just happened. You may discover that positive things do happen at work, but you only report the negative. The next day give yourself a suggestion to be aware of the positive moments. The telling of positive and hopeful things can now become a daily ritual for you and your husband. You may well discover that you enjoy your work more with each and every passing day.

At Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast, the reaction to external events can be altered in such a way as to become a permanent change. Greg understands environmental conditioning and can identify negative behaviour patterns which can be difficult for you to see. Working with Greg, you can eliminate the bad hypnotist while accentuating the good one.

Interpreting Dreams With Hypnosis

Dream Interpretation Through Hypnosis

Sigmund Freud famously said, “Dreams are the royal road to the unconscious.” The human mind is an amazing computer that works 24/7 to solve our problems. Even while sleeping, the unconscious mind continues to work to resolve our most pressing issues. Dreams are wish fulfillment, either conscious or repressed. Since many of our primary concerns are quite disturbing in nature, the unconscious mind disguises them by distorting the symbols. If it does not, we will experience nightmares and awaken disturbed without true insight into the nature of our fears. In order to unlock the secret code of our dreams, it is necessary to understand some of the ways in which our dreams are distorted.

This is the tendency of the unconscious mind to substitute one thing for another. For example, a person who is experiencing anxiety about their job and financial security might wander through a strange city looking for a specific address on Easy Street. Consciously, he or she may have repressed this fear of being inadequate in their job or being fired. Under hypnosis, the remembering of this detail can provide the clue that can lead to a realisation that changing their career is in order.

Often our dreams will appear to us like a movie. We are the main character and we observe ourselves in a third person kind of way. Perhaps, we are transported back to a simpler place and time to which we wish to return. We can become the hero or heroine in our dreams overcoming obstacles or suffering defeat. This type of dream can encourage or empower us, or be very discouraging.

Sometimes in dreams, two characters may merge into one, or one character may transform into another. In your dream, you may be playing with a cute and affectionate kitten, in the next instance, it transforms into a vicious animal. This could be indicative of your concern about the duality of a specific person, perhaps your wife or husband.

This is the tendency to transfer a behaviour from one thing to another less threatening thing. In the case of a person who is feeling repressed anger towards someone in his or her life, they might dream about smashing the television set. This is less threatening to your image than committing an act of physical violence against another person.

The unconscious mind holds the key to those unrecognisable symbols and it has been proven time and time again that a skilled hypnotherapist can assist the client in unlocking these secrets, thus aiding in resolving primary concerns and fears. A skillful hypnotherapist can help provide insight and post-hypnotic suggestions to aid the client in experiencing a greater occurrence of empowering and problem-solving dreams.

Three Hypnotic Inductions

Three Hypnotic Induction Methods

Initially, the most fascinating part of the hypnosis session is the induction. There is a great number of different types of inductions and deepening techniques. At Moving Minds Gold Coast Hypnotherapy, the induction is tailored to the client. Some inductions will be better suited to a specific client than others. As long as active cooperation between the hypnotist and the subject is achieved, almost any type of induction will be effective.

Progressive Relaxation

As in all forms of induction, it begins with a pre-induction. During the pre-induction, the client’s goals are addressed, in addition, his or her concerns and questions are answered. This is a good time for the hypnotist and the subject to establish rapport as they will be functioning as a partnership during the induction. This method is very reliable and seldom misunderstood. It can be used with or without music. The subject is allowed to sit in a very comfortable chair, in a very loose and relaxed position in a room with comfortable temperature and soothing lighting. Hypnosis is created with the use of words, and through the use of words, the subject will be guided to relax individual body parts starting from the top of the head and floating down to the tips of the toes. When optimum relaxation occurs, the conscious mind will gradually and naturally drift into abeyance until a state of hypnosis occurs.

Eye Fascination

Following the pre-induction, and after being once again comfortably seated, the hypnotist draws the client’s concentration to a particular point of attention. It could be a laser light on the wall, a swinging pendulum, a spinning disc, a flame or any other point of focus. As the eyes stare at the object, ocular fatigue is created. The hypnotist is simultaneously giving the client verbal suggestion to intensify the fatigue. The point is located slightly upward. Within a short amount of time, the eyes will close and the conscious mind will once again drift into abeyance.

The Confusion Method of Induction

This method can be used as an initial induction as well as a very effective deepening technique. The confusion method was developed by the Father of Modern Hypnosis Milton Erickson and it brilliantly uses contradictory messaging to tire the conscious mind and allow it to let go into abeyance. Suggestions are meaningful but contradictory, given in quick succession. For example, the client may be told his right hand is lifting upwards while his left hand is remaining stationary and then quickly and in a confident manner those suggestions are reversed.

While any of these inductions and many others not discussed will be effective in most situations, the measure of a good hypnotist is what happens after the induction occurs. The pre-induction and the induction are necessary precursors to the hypnotherapy that takes place, and they are all effective whether your goal is weight loss, stress relief, smoking cessation or any of the other therapies offered at Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast.

Hypnosis Myths

Hypnosis, the Misunderstood Science

The scientific phenomenon of hypnosis has such remarkable powers to affect positive change in human behaviour that it has been viewed as magical. In fact, it has been presented as a supernatural experience by many practitioners of the art. In 1773, Anton Mesmer beguiled the French Aristocracy by claiming that the stars, the planets affected people by influencing an unseen fluid distilled by him through lodestone. He concocted The Theory of Animal Magnetism. The French courtiers believed it and were attracted in mass by this charismatic man. They were charmed into feeling better and, indeed, the word mesmerize came from his name. Parisians believed that the power sprang forth from the stars as controlled by this mystical man, never realising that the real power was within them, arising from their own belief and faith. This would not be the first or last misconception with regard to hypnosis. In this article, a few of the most common myths with regard to hypnosis will be explored.

Hypnosis is Sleep

The early verbiage of hypnosis has led to this erroneous belief. The image of a hypnotist using a swinging pocket watch for an eye fascination while saying, “You are getting sleepy; when I count from three to zero, you will fall into a deep sleep,” leaves us with the understandable impression that hypnosis is sleep. While there are similarities, the differences are many. When we sleep, awareness is suspended, while in hypnosis awareness is intensified. In hypnosis, the subject can and does respond to suggestions, not so with sleep. Physiologically, the heart rate, lung functioning, and blood circulation are closer to waking state than the sleeping state. If sleeping and hypnotism were the same experiences, hypnotism would be superfluous.

Hypnotism is Only for Weak-minded People

Some people believe that intellect and personal power of the hypnotist overwhelm and control the weaker minded subject. In reality, quite the opposite is true. Hypnosis is created by cooperation between the subject and the hypnotist, and the more intelligent and imaginative the client, the more powerful the impact of the hypnotic session.

The Danger of Not Awakening from the Hypnotic State

This is, of course, a false concern. There is no danger of this occurring. When the subject becomes uncomfortable with the process, they will quite naturally abrogate or awaken. Otherwise, the session will end when the hypnotist suggests it is over, or through relaxation, the patron actually will fall into a natural sleep from which they will naturally awake.

At Moving Minds Hypnotherapy Gold Coast, we want you to know that the session belongs to you. Whether your goal is weight loss, to reduce anxiety, stress relief, smoking cessation or any of our other therapies, you control your thoughts. The suggestions come from your goals as expressed to the hypnotists. In cooperation with your hypnotist, you can quickly and enjoyably accomplish your goals.

Non-Smoker With Hypnosis

Smoker to Non-Smoker With Hypnosis

When tobacco was discovered in the Americas and first introduced to Europeans, it was marketed as a health product. It was thought that the fire and smoke eliminated the disease. Tobacco was the perfect product, cheap to produce, transport and there was no spoilage. With the rise of movies and television, tobacco marketers learned to associate smoking with beautiful, rich and sophisticated people. Thus the identification smoker was born. People wanted to be like their heroes and heroines and began to model their behaviour. Essentially, it is now understood that smoking is a dangerously unhealthy and expensive habit. Yet, identification smokers remain. There is another type of smoker. The replacement smoker uses smoking as a substitute for a void in his or her life. Perhaps in the place of food, sexual gratification, love, friendship, etc. Hypnosis is an excellent tool for moving the client from smoker to non-smoker. Different techniques exist for each of these two categories of a smoker.

Identification Smoker

Identification smoking is the most common and generally begins at an early age. Even after the person no longer identifies with the individual or group, the habit remains. As with any habit, it takes time to recondition the unconscious mind to make the change. One technique that has been successfully employed by hypnotist is to determine the smokers comfort range. For example, if a person is comfortable smoking 18 cigarettes a day, the hypnotherapist puts him on a program of smoking 20 cigarettes a day for 7 days with the hypnotic suggestion that he or she will be more aware than ever before of the taste in his or her mouth. The second week the client is told to break ten cigarettes in half and smoke each half increasing the heat up to 140 degrees. The next week the client is told to change the brand of cigarettes to a cheaper one and smoke 5 a day. On the last day of the week, a post-hypnotic suggestion is given that the subject is now an ex-smoker.

Replacement Smoker

The replacement smokers enjoy the feel of the cigarette in their hands, the business of lighting the cigarette and the sight of the smoke rising in the air. Generally, the strategy for the replacement smoker is to replace this habit with one that is more gratifying. Ronald Regan famously quit smoking by replacing the habit with eating jelly beans. Other replacements that have worked or vaping, drinking water, inhaling aromatherapy, etc. Often an empowering activity such as lifting weights, running, bicycling or swimming is introduced. The hypnotherapist should specifically tailor this substitution to something that captures the active imagination of the client.

The strategies suggested are in no way the only ones that will produce positive results. However, simply by being aware of whether you are an identification are replacement smoker can allow you to utilize a strategy that works best for you in your journey from smoker to non-smoker.
